Job Description
- Detecting and diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults in engines and parts
- Dismantling and removing engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms and other components, and checking parts
- Repairing and replacing worn and defective parts and reassembling mechanical components, and referring to service manuals as needed
- Performing scheduled maintenance services, such as oil changes, lubrications and engine tune-ups, to achieve smoother running of vehicles and ensure compliance with pollution regulations
- Reassembling engines and parts after being repaired
- Testing and adjusting mechanical parts after being repaired for proper performance
- Diagnosing and testing parts with the assistance of computers
- May inspect vehicles and issue roadworthiness certificates or detail work required to achieve roadworthiness
- May respond to vehicle breakdown service calls

How to ApplyStep 1: Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA)
- Submit your application online through the TRA Online Portal.
- Provide your proof of identity, visa, and Australian educational qualifications.
- Submit verifiable evidence of at least 360 hours of work or internship experience. This may include payslips, employment reference letters, and vocational placement logbooks.
Eligibility Requirements: (1) You must hold a valid visa with work rights (students holding a student visa may also apply if they have work rights). (2) You must possess an Australian qualification registered under CRICOS that is directly related to your nominated occupation. This qualification must have been completed within the last 3 years. (3) You must provide evidence of having completed at least 360 hours of paid employment and/or vocational internship in your nominated occupation. This experience must have been completed within the 3 years prior to applying for the PSA.
Step Two: Job Ready Employment (JRE)
- Finding the right job.
- Submit your employer information through the online portal for TRA approval.
- Once approved, your JRE start date will be confirmed.
- Work, earn wages, and meticulously keep records (such as pay stubs, time sheets).
- Complete and submit your Skills Progress Reports (SPRs) as required by TRA.

(2) The work must be performed with a TRA-approved employer. (3) You must regularly submit Skills Progress Reports (SPRs) and work logs detailing the tasks and responsibilities you have undertaken.
Step 3: Job Ready Workplace Assessment (JRWA)
- Once you meet the eligibility requirements, TRA will notify you that you can proceed with JRWA
- An assessor approved by TRA will contact you and your employer to schedule an assessment time.
- The assessor will visit your workplace, observe you performing your job duties, inspect your work outcomes, and ask you and your employer questions about your skills and responsibilities.
Eligibility Requirements: (1) You must currently be in the JRE (Step Two) phase. (2) From your JRE start date, you must have completed and provided evidence of at least 863 hours of paid work within a minimum of 6 calendar months. (3) Your employer must agree to the assessment being conducted at the workplace.
Step 4: Job Ready Final Assessment (JRFA)
- Once you have met the hour and time requirements, you can apply for JRFA online.
- You need to submit the final payroll along with any other conclusive evidence to prove that you have met the 1,725-hour requirement.
