Job Description

  • Collecting data about clients and assessing their cognitive, behavioural and emotional disorders
  • Administering and interpreting diagnostic tests and formulating plans for treatment
  • Developing, administering and evaluating individual and group treatment programs
  • Consulting with other professionals on details of cases and treatment plans
  • Conducting research studies of motivation in learning, group performance and individual differences in mental abilities and educational performance

  • Performing job analyses and establishing job requirements by observing and interviewing employees and managers

Eligibility Assessment

  • The nominated occupation must be Psychologist (ANZSCO 2723xx).
  • Must have completed at least six years of full-time equivalent education and training in psychology (undergraduate + honors degree + postgraduate + internship).
  • The academic qualifications must be equivalent to an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited psychology program.

Assessment Requirements

  • Minimum Education Requirements

    • Completion of at least six years of full-time equivalent psychology education, typically including:
      • 3-year undergraduate degree in Psychology (APAC accredited)
      • 1-year Honours degree
      • 2-year Master's or Doctoral degree (including supervised clinical practice)
    • Or an overseas qualification deemed equivalent to the above pathway.
  • Work and Practice Requirements

    • General Requirements
      • At least 1,000 hours of supervised psychological practice (Supervised Practice/Placement).
      • Must cover diverse psychological service settings (clinical, counseling, educational, organizational, research, etc.).
      • If the applicant's qualifications do not fully meet APS requirements, additional paid or supervised psychology-related work experience may be required to bridge the gap.
    • Additional Requirements for Specific Endorsements (listed under "Other Requirements"):
      • Clinical Psychologist (272311): Must complete a Master's/Doctorate in Clinical Psychology + at least 1,000 hours of clinical internship, with most cases preferably in a hospital/clinical setting.
      • Educational Psychologist (272312): Requires a relevant Master's degree in Educational Psychology + at least 500 hours of supervised practice in school, child, or adolescent environments.
      • Organisational Psychologist (272313): Requires a Master's in Industrial/Organisational Psychology + at least 500 hours of psychological work experience in a corporate or organizational setting.
      • Counselling Psychologist (272315): Requires a Master's in Counselling Psychology + at least 800 hours of supervised counseling cases (adult/family/adolescent).
      • Neuropsychologist (272316): Requires postgraduate qualifications in Neuropsychology + at least 1,000 hours of experience in neuropsychological assessment and intervention within a hospital or rehabilitation setting.
      • Psychotherapist / Psychologists nec (272314, 272399): Requires postgraduate qualifications in Psychotherapy + substantial supervised psychotherapy cases (typically 500–1,000 hours).
  • English Language Requirements

    • IELTS Academic: Overall score ≥7.0, with each band ≥7.0
    • TOEFL iBT: Overall score ≥94 (Writing ≥27, Speaking ≥23, Reading ≥24, Listening ≥24)
    • PTE Academic: Overall score ≥65 (each band ≥65)
    • OET: Minimum score of B in each component
  • Other Requirements

    • Overseas qualifications must submit a detailed course syllabus.
    • If the qualification gap is significant, APS may recommend the applicant undertake a Bridging Program (e.g., 5+1 Internship Program or 6th-year internship).
    • Work and internship experience must be officially documented (e.g., supervisor report / employment reference).
