Job Description
- Directing fishing operations by using knowledge about the species sought, fishing areas, seasons and the capabilities of the vessel and crew
- Directing crew in catching fish, molluscs and crustacea at varying depths using nets, lines, poles, pots and traps
- Planning, controlling and coordinating the operational and maintenance requirements of a ship's propulsion and domestic plant and equipment
- Operating plant and equipment and performing routine maintenance on ship's systems including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, steam generating, and fire prevention and control systems
- Controlling and directing shipping operations to ensure the safe and efficient loading and transport of cargo and passengers
- Ensuring compliance with regulations pertaining to safety at sea and protection of the marine environment
- Directing the activities of the deck crew for navigational support tasks, berthing and unberthing, maintenance, cleaning and painting of superstructures, and repair and replacement of defective deck gear and equipment
- Navigating a ship by supervising the ship's course and speed according to predetermined passage plans and safety procedures
- Examining and approving design plans of hulls and equipment such as main propulsion engines, auxiliary boilers and turbines, electrical power generating plant, refrigeration and airconditioning plant and pumping systems
- Conducting periodic surveys throughout a ship's life to ensure standards are maintained

Eligibility Assessment
- The nominated occupation belongs to the ANZSCO 2312 series (Master, Engineer, Officer, Surveyor).
- Holds an AMSA-recognized maritime qualification (Certificate of Competency, CoC) that corresponds to the nominated occupation.
- Education and work experience must meet the standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) STCW Convention.

Assessment Requirements
- Minimum Education Requirements
- A degree in a relevant maritime discipline (e.g., Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Maritime Operations).
- The degree must comply with the standards of the STCW Convention.
- Qualification Certificate Requirements
- Must hold a Certificate of Competency (CoC) corresponding to the nominated occupation and recognized by AMSA.
- For example:
- Master → Master CoC
- Engineer → Engineer Class CoC
- Officer → Deck/Engineer Officer CoC
- Surveyor → Marine Surveyor Licence

- Work Experience Requirements
- Provide valid seagoing service records proving practical operational and navigational experience.
- Generally requires no less than 12–36 months of relevant experience, depending on the occupation and certificate level.
- English Language Requirements (if the degree was not taught in English):
- IELTS Academic: Overall score ≥ 6.0, with no band less than 5.5
- Or equivalent TOEFL iBT / PTE Academic scores
- Other Requirements
- Applicants must meet AMSA's health and medical fitness requirements.
- If qualifications or certificates are obtained overseas, a detailed course syllabus / training content must be submitted.
- AMSA may require additional written tests, oral exams, or interviews to confirm the applicant's professional competence.
