"The moon rises over the sea, and we share this moment at the ends of the earth." Curtin University wishes all students studying in Australia and their families peace, joy, and lasting happiness. This year's Mid-Autumn Festival is particularly special for Curtin. As everyone gazes at the stars, besides a full moon, there are also three satellites from Curtin University accompanying everyone!

In August this year, designed and manufactured by Curtin University, three satellites were successfully launched and arrived at the International Space Station (ISS),marking the first time a Western Australian commercial payload has passed through the Earth's atmosphere, and another significant breakthrough in the booming space industry of Western Australia!

"Curtin Made": Another Major Milestone

Binar 2, 3, and 4 satellites were launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX rocket and have docked at the International Space Station.

As early as 2021, Binar 1, the first successfully launched satellite from Western Australia, was manufactured by Curtin University. This launch marks another milestone achievement for Curtin University and Western Australia!

These three satellites, designed and manufactured by Curtin, are all "CubeSats," a type of small, economical satellite designed for scientific, technological, and research missions.

"It's truly incredible to see the launch of three of the world's most advanced satellites of their kind, designed and manufactured locally by students and staff at Curtin University, and carrying Western Australian commercial payloads. The successful launch of Binar 2, 3, and 4 is significant for the next step in Western Australia's space journey."

Professor Phil Bland

Chief Investigator of the Binar Project, Distinguished Professor at Curtin University

This operation is a milestone for Western Australia,as these satellites carry equipment from Australia's national science agency CSIRO and Perth-based communications systems company AVI,marking the first time Western Australian companies have sent their products into space.

AVI will directly test its spacecraft communication systems in the space environment, while CSIRO will test how new materials protect electronic equipment from radiation.

Currently, these satellites are flying at a speed of 28,000 kilometers per hour, orbiting the Earth every 90 minutes. Their mission will end in 9 to 12 months, when they will burn up upon re-entering the Earth's atmosphere.

"Driving Innovation": New Project to Launch Soon

Ms. Bennell-Pegg and Professor Bland

Katherine Bennell-Pegg, asthe first Australian to undergo astronaut training and Australia's first female astronaut, extends her heartfelt congratulations to the Binar team's achievements.

"It's incredibly exciting to be in Western Australia and interact with the local burgeoning space industry as this major feat unfolds!"

Australia's First Female Astronaut

The successful launch of these three satellites is a significant contribution by the team and Western Australia to the global space industry.

Over the next 12 months, the Binar team plans to launch a new project using larger spacecraft and a world-leading, Western Australian-designed propulsion system, continuing to drive innovation as an on-campus R&D project!

Binar Chief Investigator, Professor Bland of Curtin University, stated that this new mission will focus on providing reference information for predicting forest fires and urban heat island effects.
