Julia Gillard AC

Julia Gillard AC is the 27th Prime Minister of Australia, the first and only woman to hold this position.Former Prime Minister Gillard is a staunch advocate for gender equality, education, mental health, and social inclusion, embodying the values that UOW has always cherished.


Throughout her career, both in office and out, Gillard has made significant progress in driving policy reforms, especially in the fields of education and women's rights. Her leadership, resilience, and vision for a fairer and more equal society have had a lasting impact on Australia and the world.

Kay Patterson AO

RespectedKay Patterson AOPhD has made a huge contribution to Australia's healthcare and social services.Dr. Pattersonwas elected as a senator in1987and has held several important ministerial positions, including Minister for Health and Aging, Minister for Family and Community Services, and Minister assisting the Prime Minister for Women's Issues.During her tenure, she led reforms that transformed the nation's healthcare and social service systems, including major reforms to Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

John NowlanJohn Nowlan

is the Chief Technology and Development Officer at BlueScope.In addition to receiving an honorary doctoral degree fromUOW, he will also be awarded the title of University Fellow.As an alumnus ofUOW, John graduated with first-class honors and the University Engineering Medal in1983, excelling in the balanced development of industry practice and academic pursuit.As an outstanding leader in the technological transformation of the steel industry, John has continuously supported UOW by collaborating with the university on steel-related research, training, and development projects. Professor William Buttemer is internationally recognized for his significant contributions to physiological ecology.

Since joining UOW in 1992, Professor Buttemer has had a profound impact on biological science research.
