In Arab countries, due to religious reasons, it is not easy for women to become leaders, and it is even more rare to gain widespread social recognition. However, this female alumnus of the University of Wollongong has achieved it. Today, we introduce this exemplary successful woman from the UAE.

Dr Reem OsmanDr.2012graduated from the University of Wollongong Dubai campusUOWD, has now become the first female in the UAE in the healthcare sectorCEO, and the second femaleCEOin the UAE.OsmanDr.'s intelligence and dedication to work and family have formed a powerful influence in society. Recently, she was selected by 'Arab Business' magazine as one of the UAE's '2024year50most influential female leaders'.

Beyond traditional concepts


Dr. Osman was born in Syria and loved learning from a young age, but she never dreamed of the career she is in today. She said: 'In Syria, all parents want their children to become doctors or engineers. The humanitarian and scientific aspects of medicine attracted me as a noble profession.'

In 2010, after serving as an ophthalmologist at the Saudi German Hospital for four years, Dr. Osman decided it was time to open another direction for her career path, so she enrolled in a two-year MBA program at the University of Wollongong Dubai campus.

Dr. Osman is very grateful for her study time at UOWD. She said: 'The MBA program at UOWD is recognized as one of the best in our region, and it is also very convenient to attend classes there.' Dr. Osman greatly enjoyed her two years of study at UOWD. She said: 'I have great respect for my professors, who were very supportive of me. The course content laid a solid foundation for me to achieve the career change I wanted.'


Starting anew, achieving greater success


After successfully completing the MBA program at UOWD, Dr. Osman returned to the Saudi German Hospital where she had previously worked, but this time not as a doctor, but as a member of the finance team.

Her knowledge of business and management from UOWD gave her career a qualitative leap. A few months after returning to the hospital, Dr. Osman was promoted to CEO, focusing on innovation and expansion, with the number of employees jumping from 400 in 2012 to 2,000 today.


Regarding why she chose to pursue an MBA directly, and why she pursued an MBA after becoming a doctor, Dr. Osman said: 'A CEO without a medical background might be good, but in healthcare management, you deal with a variety of doctors, all of whom are proud of their profession. It is very important to understand the nature of their work from their perspective. Having a medical background is an advantage in showing respect in communication, making it more convincing.'

Currently, as a successfulCEO,OsmanDr. believes her management style is open, encouraging communication and sharing among the team.


She said innovation comes not only from talking with the team but also from listening and exchanging ideas with them. In addition, Dr. Osman said that female leaders are not necessarily aggressive, and her own management style focuses more on efficiency.


Under Dr. Osman's management and leadership, the Saudi German Hospital has become one of the best hospitals in the region.
