On May 28, Her Excellency Jeannette Young, the Governor of Queensland, officially visited Shanghai to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the sister city agreement between Queensland and Shanghai and attended a celebratory luncheon.

Her Excellency Jeannette Young, the Governor of Queensland, stated that the long-term relationship between Queensland and China has achieved remarkable success, with much to celebrate.

Queensland is very proud to have signed the sister city agreement with Shanghai and to contribute to the many benefits this agreement has brought to Queensland and Shanghai.'

From May 27 to June 1, Her Excellency Jeannette Young will meet with Queensland businesses and government representatives in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. The Governor will also attend a Queensland Friends reception in Guangzhou during her visit and meet with numerous Queensland businesses, educational institutions, and alumni conducting business activities in the Chinese market.
In 1989, then Queensland Premier Mike Ahern and then Shanghai Mayor, later Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, signed this landmark memorandum of understanding.
Since then, cooperation between China and Queensland has continued to develop, including in the fields of tourism, cultural exchange, education, and trade.
China is Queensland's largest source of international students, as well as Queensland's largest trading partner and export market, with exports reaching AUD 24 billion in 2023.

Total exports in 2023 reached AUD 144.3 billion
Queensland is a major export state, with one in five jobs supported by exports, and one in four jobs dependent on interstate or international trade.
In 2022-23, Queensland's total exports (goods and services) reached AUD 144.3 billion, setting a new record high.
At the same time, Queensland is also Australia's second-largest goods export market. Queensland's goods exports account for more than one-fifth of Australia's total goods exports, with Japan, China, India, and South Korea being Queensland's main goods export destinations.

On October 31, 2023, the direct flight from Brisbane to Shanghai by China Eastern Airlines, which had been suspended for three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resumed operations. In November, Queensland's largest-ever trade delegation came to Shanghai to participate in the China International Import Expo (CIIE). Queensland will return to the event in 2024.
