Visiting the Ancient Capital of Thirteen Dynasties, Engaging in Five Thousand Years of Dialogue | Exploring the New Columbus Study Abroad Program between UOW and Xidian University

From July 1-14, 2024, 15 undergraduate students from the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences at the University of Wollongong, Australia, came to China for a 2-week New Columbus Plan study tour project. The project was initiated by the University of WollongongWilly SusiloDistinguished Professor, Dr. Liu Xueqiao, Dr. Cui Jin, Dr. Huang Tairan, and Ms. Rachel Weine, coordinated by Xidian University, arranged a rich program of course learning, field visits, and cultural exchanges for the students from the University of Wollongong. In addition, the study tour group was invited to visit universities within Shaanxi Province such as Xijing University and Shaanxi Normal University, visited the Xi'an History Museum, the millennia-old Terracotta Warriors, and experienced traditional Chinese culture such as calligraphy, Chinese painting, guqin, and Hanfu, gaining a lot.
This study visit started with the grand opening ceremony of the '2024 Xidian-Australia University of Wollongong Network Engineering Summer Camp' on July 1, 2024, and ended with the closing ceremony on July 12. Professor Li Hui, Dean of the School of Network and Information Security, Professor Shen Yulong, Director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Department of Xidian University, Professor Chen Xiaofeng, Vice Dean of the School of Network and Information Security, Associate Professor Zhang Xiaoyu, Dr. Zhao Zhen, Section Chief Hu Xiaoxia of the International Cooperation and Exchange Department, Professor Zhang Yinghui of Xi'an University of Posts and Telecommunications, Professor Wang Hao of Xidian University, Associate Professor Liang Xueqin, and Dr. Arthur Sandor Voundi Koe arranged a variety of on-campus and off-campus activities for the visiting teachers and students from the University of Wollongong.
The study tour group immersed themselves in the North and South campuses of Xidian University, the library, the Computer Basic Teaching Experiment Center, etc., and benefited greatly from academic lectures on encryption technology, artificial intelligence, network security, and trust management technology taught by Xidian experts.At the graduation ceremony, the students reported on the cutting-edge technologies they learned and new insights into Chinese culture.Willy SusiloThe University of Wollongong delegation, led by the Distinguished Professor, deeply thanked the leaders of the School of Network and Information Security at Xidian University, the teachers on campus, and the volunteer students for their meticulous care for the delegation.The successful holding of this study tour has laid a good foundation for deeper cooperation between the two universities in more aspects in the future.

On July 9, the study tour group visited Xijing University.Su Xuejing, Director of the International Exchange and Cooperation Department, and Li Haixia , Dean of the Accounting School, together received the UOW study tour group.Also participating in the exchange activities were Hou Xingang, Vice Dean of the Accounting School, Li He, Vice Dean of the Accounting School, Zhang Shuwen, Assistant to the Dean of the Accounting School, Associate Professor Yasir, , Li Shijie, Section Chief of the Foreign Affairs Department of the International Exchange Department, , Cui Qing, Section Chief of the Academic Affairs Section of the Accounting School, Chen Yaoxi, Section Chief of the Student Affairs Section of the Accounting School, , Liang Shanzheng, Director of the Comprehensive Office of the Accounting School, and undergraduate students from the Accounting School.During the day's rich itinerary, the study tour group listened to the achievements of Xijing University's research on ESG, participated in sports competitions with local students, visited museums, learned Chinese musical instruments, and engaged in diversified exchanges such as literary and artistic handicraft creation.Ma Guoliang, Director of the Xijing Museum and a famous calligrapher, wrote 'Wind and Moon Share the Same Sky' on the spot and presented it to the University of Wollongong visiting group, hoping for more cooperation between the two universities in the future.





On July 11, the study tour group visited Shaanxi Normal University, directly under the Ministry of Education. Dr. Ren Haiyun, Director of the Finance and Accounting Department, Dr. Guo Yujing, Deputy Director of the Finance and Accounting Department, Dr. Lu Di, Associate Professor of the Finance and Accounting Department, Dr. Zhu Danfeng, Lecturer of the Finance and Accounting Department, and Dr. Li Zhengfeng, an outstanding alumnus of the University of Wollongong and currently a Lecturer in the Business Administration Department, received the UOW study tour group. The students visited the distinctive Education Museum and gained an in-depth understanding of the rich historical background of China from the imperial examination system to modern education.

The study tour group ended all their visits to China in a pleasant exchange atmosphere. This event was a positive experience, promoting communication and understanding between overseas students and Chinese institutions, and sparking positive innovation. This gathering also deepened understanding, enhanced friendships, and made everyone cherish life and friendships even more!
The outstanding students from the University of Wollongong also represented the university and Australia very well in this event, fostering deep feelings with the civilized ancient city of Xi'an and its local residents. They left a good impression of Australia's friendliness, positivity, and happiness with the local university teachers, students, and the public.
