4. Definition of merit-based admission

Academic performance uses WAM (Weighted Average Mark) to determine the academic performance at UNSW, and accordingly rank all international applicants.

  • Admission to postgraduate courses at UNSW. A score calculator can be used to generate an approximate equivalent WAM for UNSW.
  • The admissions department will rank all applicants based on their equivalent WAM and issue offer letters (through a round of admissions) until the course enrollment quota is full.
  • Limited additional admissions for the first semester of 2025 - because the number of applicants exceeds the admission quota
  • In early 2025, we hope to provide more offer letters for the 2nd and 3rd semesters of 2025.

5. Future offer expiration dates

From November 20, 2024, all new overseas student commencement (NOSC) offer holders will have a specific deadline (within 10 days, refer to the above table in 2) to accept or decline studying at UNSW. The offer validity period will be automatically generated when the offer letter is issued.

The following students do not have a 10-day offer deadline:

  • Sponsored students
  • UNSW College packaged offer courses
  • Overseas students studying online
  • Internal Program Transfer (IPT) students
  • Higher Degree Research (HDR) students
  • Non-degree students
  • *Accepting an offer means the student must accept and pay the deposit

7. Some Q&A responses

Q: Can applicants whose offer letters have been withdrawn apply for a refund of the application fee? How can they apply for a refund if they don't want to wait anymore?

A: Applicants whose offer letters have been withdrawn and who have not opted into the admission waiting list will have their application fee automatically refunded (if applicable). Refunds will be received by December 20, 2024.

Q: Some students have not received withdrawal emails, such as students who have deferred admission, can such students still receive offers?

A: Deferred admissions have not been confirmed, the school is still reviewing

Q: For students who submitted applications before October 16 and whose applications have not yet been reviewed, do they still have a chance to receive offers? Is it based on merit-based admission? Is there a pattern to issuing offer letters?

A: Including existing applications and withdrawn offers, as long as they are in the waiting list, these applications will be selected on merit based on academic performance

Q: For students holding offer letters who have now met the admission conditions but cannot upload documents due to the late deadline of the offer letter. How to handle?

A: The UNSW admissions department is working on a process for submitting documents for conditional offer students on the waiting list, we expect to communicate further details about this process in the coming weeks.
