This degree focuses on a new research initiative aimed at decarbonizing the global steel manufacturing value chain, with a particular emphasis on the connections between Australia and China in this research. The project is related to the Zero-Carbon Energy for the Asia-Pacific (ZCEAP) initiative in the Asia-Pacific region and is also part of the 'ANU Grand Challenge' project, led by Professor Frank Jotzo and Dr. Jorrit Gosens, affiliated with the Center for Climate and Energy Policy at the Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University.

PhD scholars will focus on one of the following research areas:

◎ Cost-optimized technical pathways for decarbonizing steel production in China and globally

◎ The local economic impacts of different trajectories for decarbonizing steelmaking in Australia and/or China

◎ Policy options to encourage the acceleration of decarbonizing steel production in China and globally, and their feasibility

◎ The industry outlook and barriers to decarbonizing steelmaking

◎ Where PhD scholars seek to engage in model development work, it could be a range of different model types, including optimization models, CGE models, IAM, etc.


Applicants can submit at any time, with rolling reviews. However, due to different scholarship deadlines, we recommend contacting us at least six weeks before the following deadlines to discuss and formulate a research proposal. Scholarships available for international applicants include:

◎ AGRTP, for international applicants: April 15, 2025 (for projects starting in August 2025)

◎ ANU-CSC Scholarship, for Chinese citizens only: December 1, 2024 (for projects starting in October 2025)

◎ Australian National University PhD Scholarship, for all applicants: until filled
