On September 6, 2024, the Treasurer of the Victorian Government of Australia presided over the launch ceremony and held a press conference, announcingAustralian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Innovation(Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Innovation) officially launched. This is not only Australia's first AI medical research center, but alsothe world's first center focused on accelerating personalized cancer vaccine innovation research through AI + Nobel Prize mRNA technology.
World's First AI Medical Research Center
Victorian Government Investment10 million AUDand La Trobe University jointly established ACAMI, a world-class research center, with La Trobe University also investing9.3 million AUD.Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallassaid: 'Our investment in ACAMI will help Victorian researchers achieve major medical breakthroughs and save more lives.'
Internationally renowned scholar, Cisco Chair Professor of Artificial Intelligence, Director of the Cisco-La Trobe AI IoT Research CenterProfessor Xiang Wei, was jointly appointed by the Victorian Government and La Trobe University asACAMI Founding Director and Chief Scientist.
AI and Nobel Prize mRNA Technology Combine to Drive Medical Innovation
The combination of AI and mRNA technology was the driving force behind the rapid rollout of global COVID-19 vaccines. The 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to two outstanding scientists who invented mRNA vaccine technology, Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman. Professor Katalin Karikó has long served as Senior Vice President of BioNTech.
The Victorian Government andGerman Nobel Prize-winning biotech giant BioNTechare collaborating to build the largest mRNA vaccine manufacturing center in the Southern Hemisphere at La Trobe University's Melbourne campus. ACAMI will further advance AI medical research through close collaboration with BioNTech.
NVIDIA Supercomputing Accelerates Research
NVIDIA also announced that it will provide the Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Innovation ACAMI withAustralia's first NVIDIA DGX H200 supercomputerand the NVIDIA Clara platform to accelerate AI medical diagnostics and research.
Rory Kelleher, NVIDIA's Global Head of Healthcare and Life Sciences, stated: 'AI and accelerated computing can address major challenges in the healthcare industry. ACAMI's AI projects will bring tangible benefits to patients in disease detection and treatment planning.'”
AI-Driven Victorian Healthcare Ecosystem
ACAMI is located in La Trobe University's Research and Innovation Park, becoming part of the 'Future University City'. Through collaboration with the Victorian Government, ACAMI will play a key role in building Victoria's AI-driven healthcare ecosystem, ensuring the state's world-leading medical technology keeps pace with global AI capabilities.
La Trobe University President Professor Theo Farrell said: 'Collaborating with the Victorian Government to establish ACAMI is not only significant for scientific discovery but also provides students with valuable learning opportunities.'
Professor Xiang Wei explained that AI technology will also significantly shorten drug development time, promoting the discovery of new therapies and clinical trials. 'Through AI technology, we can develop precise personalized medical solutions tailored to each patient's unique genetic characteristics, which will greatly improve treatment outcomes.'
Professor Xiang Wei also pointed out: 'In the foreseeable future, we will use AI technology to achieve personalized customization of various cancer vaccines. AI and mRNA technology bring us closer to this goal.'
Initial Project Development: Digital Twin and Cancer Research
ACAMI has launched several initial projects, one of which is collaborating withthe Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Instituteto develop a 'digital twin' of breast cancer tumors.
This virtual model can predict patients' responses to immunotherapy, potential side effects, and survival rates. This marks the first application of 'digital twin' technology in supporting clinical decision-making, signifying its successful transition from NASA's aerospace applications to the medical field.

Broad Prospects for AI Industry Employment
According to data from Invest Victoria, Victoria accounts for nearly60% of Australia's pharmaceutical exports, making it the state's highest-value advanced manufacturing export product. The establishment of ACAMI will further consolidate Victoria's leadership in global medical innovation.
Additionally, the biotechnology industry employs over100,000people in Victoria. According to the Australian Technology Council, employment in the AI industry has increased from 800 in 2014 to 33,000 in 2023, and is expected to create200,000 jobs by 2030.La Trobe University will cultivate more professionals for this rapidly growing industry through the Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Innovation.
