RMIT Chinese alumni Hou Zhewen

Zhewen's career began in Australia, where he participated in the design of a townhouse in Melbourne, before returning to China to take full advantage of large project opportunities domestically. Since then, he has been engaged in architectural design, participating in the design of the Yue City Commercial and Mandarin Oriental Hotel project in Nanjing, and winning the Asia Pacific Property AwardAsia Pacific Property Award.

The learning experience at RMIT

Zhewen has architectural study and work experience in both China and Australia, specializing in designinglarge public construction projectsincluding commercial complexes, super high-rise offices, industrial parks, hotels, and apartments. He has collaborated with large real estate companies such as Jinmao, Hongkong Land, Longfor, and Vanke. He has a deep understanding of planning and product needs, and can translate this into design balance, independently completing scheme communication and design deepening presentations.

Zhewen stated, the knowledge learned in RMIT classrooms, including design concepts, presentation logic, and software use, have all helped him adapt to the work rhythm. An important prerequisite for an architectural career is preparing a portfolio to showcase personal creativity, teamwork ability, logical ability, and proficiency in relevant software, helping employers understand if you can quickly adapt to the work environment.

Life as an international student in Melbourne

Life in Melbourne has also deeply inspired Zhewen, the learning experience at RMIT has left him with unforgettable memories. Zhewen said that after coming to Melbourne, he found many things beyond his imagination. The city has universities, not only with many well-designed teaching buildings but also the historic yet well-preserved State Library. He often played basketball at the outdoor basketball court near RMIT Building 80, making friends from different cultural backgrounds.

During his study in Melbourne, Zhewen traveled to many places during holidays, experiencing different architectures and cultures. He believes that hands-on experience in practice is more valuable than learning online. For all students studying or about to start studying in Melbourne, it's important tomake full use of everything the city has to offer, to gain unforgettable study and life experiences, laying the foundation for a career.

"My advice to students is to enjoy life here. You are lucky to study in Melbourne, where there are good facilities, well-designed buildings, and an excellent location, allowing you to experience Melbourne's culture while studying."
