As a global university, the Australian National University (ANU) not only enjoys a high academic reputation worldwide but also offers numerous global exchange programs.Not only do ANU students have the opportunity to study in other countries, but students from other institutions can also apply to exchange at ANU.

From short-term course programs to a semester, or even a full year of overseas exchange study, these global exchange programs can not only count towards course credits but also allow students to enhance their personal abilities, broaden their horizons, and stand out in job hunting after graduation through these cross-cultural exchanges.


If you are currently pursuing a degree course at another university overseas, whether or not the school is a global partner of ANU, you can apply to study at ANU through ANU's global exchange programs, provided you meet the corresponding conditions.

Overseas Exchange Programs

Student Exchange


✅ Target Audience: Undergraduate and some graduate students
⏰ Exchange Duration: One semester
📚 Credit Transfer: Credits can be transferred, usually 24 credits

ANU's Overseas Exchange Program (Student Exchange) offers students the opportunity to study at other top universities around the world. Through this program, students can meet friends from all over the world, build a global network, and accumulate and enhance the skills and knowledge needed for their career development.

Students can choose fromover 170 ANU partner universities in more than 40 countries/regionsuniversitiesto spend a semester on exchange, and this overseas exchange experience can count towards the corresponding ANU degree course credits.


ANU's overseas exchange partner universities include the University of Edinburgh, the University of Manchester, Imperial College London, ETH Zurich, the University of Toronto, the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, the University of Tokyo, Waseda University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and many more.


Key Dates

First Semester Exchange Program Application:

  • Opens on April 1, closes on May 31

  • Results announced in mid-August


Second Semester Exchange Program Application:

  • Opens on October 1, closes on November 30

  • Results announced in late February of the following year

Year in Asia

Year in Asia


✅ Target Audience: Undergraduate students

⏰ Exchange Duration: One year

📚 Credit Transfer: Credits can be transferred, usually 48 credits


The 'Year in Asia' is the flagship overseas exchange program of ANU's College of Asia and the Pacific, offering studentsa 12-month exchange study period,allowing students to immerse themselves in the language and cultural atmosphere of the chosen country/region.Students can study language and professional courses at partner institutions and complete a final research project in the corresponding language upon returning to ANU.


ANU's 'Year in Asia' program is mainly open to students pursuing the following degree courses:

  • Bachelor of Arts

  • Bachelor of Asian Studies

  • Bachelor of Development Studies

  • Bachelor of International Relations

  • Bachelor of International Security Studies

  • Bachelor of Linguistics

  • Bachelor of Science


Students can choose to study in China, Indonesia, Japan, or Korea.

Independent Learning Abroad

Independent Learning Abroad


✅ Target Audience: Undergraduate and graduate students
⏰ Exchange Duration: One to two semesters (approval required)
📚 Credit Transfer: Determined by the student's college

Independent Learning Abroad programs during the semester are self-initiated and managed by students, who are responsible for all costs and pay directly to the host university or institution.This program requires students to arrange all matters themselvesand apply directly to the host school. To receive credit for the Independent Learning Abroad program, the course must be approved by the student's college.

First Year Learning Abroad Programs

PRIMO First Year Learning Abroad Programs


✅ Target Audience: First-year undergraduate students
⏰ Exchange Duration: 3-6 weeks
📚 Credit Transfer: Credits can be transferred, usually 6-12 credits

ANU offers short-term overseas exchange courses in multiple disciplines for first-year undergraduate students. Through ANU's PRIMO short-term exchange program, students can go to partner institutions for 3-6 weeks of overseas study anduse this as part of their first-year undergraduate course to earn corresponding credits.

Perhaps next summer, you will be:

> Appreciating the beauty of Kyoto, learning Japanese language and culture.

> Going to the Pearl of the Danube—Budapest, Hungary, to study business and marketing courses.

> Enjoying two weeks of Canadian summer, studying political science at a top Canadian university.


Although the program prioritizes first-year undergraduate applicants, senior students can also apply for some courses.

College-led Study Abroad Programs

College-led Programs


✅ Target Audience: Undergraduate and some graduate students
⏰ Exchange Duration: 3-6 weeks
📚 Credit Transfer: Credits can be transferred, usually 6 credits


To help students step out of the classroom and participate in field research, most colleges at ANU offer different college-led study abroad programs (College-led Programs). Led and designed by ANU's professional teachers, these programsincorporate international field trips as part of the course content, providing students with an excellent opportunity to blend learning with culture. Moreover, students can earn ANU degree course credits through this program.


Study destinations include: Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Japan, Samoa, Fiji, Hawaii, and Mongolia.

IARU Global Exchange Programs

IARU Courses


As the only Australian member of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU), ANU students can study and exchange at other world-renowned universities within the alliance through the IARU Global Exchange Program (IARU Courses).

Specifically,the members of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) include:Australian National University, ETH Zurich, National University of Singapore, Peking University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Cambridge, University of Cape Town, University of Copenhagen, University of Oxford, University of Tokyo, and Yale University.


Lectures, tutorials, peer assistance, field trips... Students will grow and progress alongside the world's best students through various learning methods.
