Benefits Extension: 3-Year Free Shuttle Bus Service Extended to 2027

For a long time, the University of WollongongUOWhas been committed to providing convenient transportation services for students, allowing them to travel to and from campus quickly and economically.On7month11day, the Acting Minister of Transport for New South WalesRyan Parkannounced that funding will continue to be provided for the free bus service ofGong Shuttlein Wollongong.

Free shuttleGong Shuttlewill connectUOW's Wollongong campus with its Innovation Campus, East Campus student accommodation, Wollongong Central Business District and beaches, hospital district, and other major transportation services. In2023year, the shuttle service carried over2.2million passengers.

The cost of the new three-year funding service agreement is shared by the New South Wales Department of Transport, Wollongong City Council, and the university.UOWhas been co-funding2018year6month sinceGong Shuttle. The new funding agreement takes effect from2024year7month1day, and will continue until2027year6month30day.

Serving the daily travel needs of most students

CurrentlyGong Shuttlehas become the most popular public transportation service among university staff, students, and visitors, with nearly half of all public transportation arrivals to campus usingGong Shuttle.

On weekdays, the free bus service runs every 10 minutes between 7 am and 6 pm, and every 20 minutes between 6 pm and 10 pm. On weekends, it runs every 20 minutes between 10 am and 5 pm.

The important role in achieving carbon neutrality

UOWis committed to achieving carbon neutrality by2030and encourages staff and students to use public and active transportation (such as cycling) as much as possible.


The university recently introduced electric buses on its free North Gong Shuttle route, which operates from North Wollongong train station to UOW Wollongong campus.


Currently, over 25% of UOW students, staff, and visitors choose to take any of the free shuttles to the Wollongong campus.


UOW has also launched other ongoing sustainability measures on campus, including recycling programs, water refill stations, e-waste collection and mobile phone recycling, biodiversity initiatives, and plastic waste reduction.UOW Shoalhavencampus100%uses renewable energy.
