1. The minimum language requirement for direct entry courses is currently IELTS 6.0

2. IELTS below 5.0 cannot be packaged with language scores

3. Applicants holding an IELTS score of 5.0 need to study at least 20 weeks of language courses

4. Applicants holding an IELTS score of 5.5 need to study at least 10 weeks of language courses, unless applying for RMIT's foundation courses and

other bridge courses that meet the immigration requirements (currently referring to Diploma of Business, Diploma of Graphic Design,

*Currently, RMIT accepts language scores from IELTS (UKVI & Academic) & single retake, PTE (UKVI & Academic), TOEFL

Summary of changes:

1. The minimum English language requirement for student visa programs without an ELICOS packaged offer has increased to an IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent)

2. Applicants with an IELTS score below 5.0 (or equivalent) cannot be issued with EAP

packaged offers

3. Applicants with an IELTS score of 5.0 (or equivalent) will be required to have a minimum of 20 weeks EAP packaged offers

4. Applicants with IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) will be required to have a minimum of 10 weeks EAP packaged offers unless they are applying for Foundation studies or eligible pathway program (refer to:https://www.legislation.gov.au/F2024L00366/latest/text)


The tables below show the English language test providers. It includes information on English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS). It also states the minimum overall band scores students must achieve to meet the Student visa English language requirement.

Effective from Monday 24 June, we will make some changes to our process in order to reflect the new English language requirements for student visa programs including:

1. Applicants with an IELTS score of 5.0 (or equivalent) will be required to have a minimum of 20 weeks EAP packaged offers including Foundation studies and VE programs (excluding C5417 Diploma of Nursing with IELTS 7.0 requirement), note that students may be required more than 20 weeks depending on their lowest band score.

2. Applicants with an IELTS score below 5.0 (or equivalent) - No EAP packaged offer will be issued, students will continue to be able to receive conditional offers for their academic programs if meeting academic, additional and SSVF requirements, but they will be required to resit for the approved English test and achieve an IELTS score of 5.0 (or above) in order to apply for an EAP packaged offer, alternatively they can apply for a standalone EAP program.

3. Applicants with IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) applying for VE programs (except eligible

pathway programs including Diploma of Business, Diploma of Graphic Design and Diploma of

Screen and Media (Content Creation)):

(1) May need to re-sit an approved English test to achieve an IELTS score of 6.0 and

meet the minimum English language requirement for student visa program without EAP

packaged offers; or

(2) Request for 10 weeks EAP packaged offer

4. No change to REW placement test and sponsored students blanket rule at this stage
