Finding Belonging in Canberra: The Growth Story of Vietnamese Girl Selena

At the age of 21, Selena, a girl born in Vietnam, embarked on a journey to Canberra, Australia with her family at the age of eight, starting a brand new life.
Now, she ispursuing a double degree in Bachelor of Business (Marketing) and Bachelor of Communication and Media (Corporate and Public Communication) at the University of Canberra, entering the final year of her studies.
Selena shared with us her story of growing up inCanberra, her learning experience at UC, why choosing a double degree was her wisest decision, and her aspirations for the future.
The Beginning of a New Life
After 14 years since leaving Vietnam, Selena and her family have settled in Australia. She has spent most of her study and life in Canberra, knowing she doesn't want to rush to leave here.
"Growing up in Canberra meant I had already decided to attend a local university after high school. Staying close to my family and avoiding jumping into an unfamiliar environment was the right choice for me."
When choosing a university, Selena was looking for a school that could offer suitable degrees in her areas of interest and support her future career development.
She ultimately chose the double degree in Bachelor of Business (Marketing) & Bachelor of Communication and Media (Corporate and Public Communication) at the University of Canberra.
"I chose UC because the double degree it offers perfectly matches my interests, my self-definition, and my expectations for my future career.My UC double degree seems tailor-made for me!" Selena shared.
She also mentioned that there are alumni from the University of Canberra in her family, which also influenced her choice. Moreover, the University of Canberra is just a street away from her high school (Lake Ginninderra College)!
Love for Canberra
Selena quickly found her place at the University of Canberra. UC not only provides high-quality education and a rich selection of courses but also has friendly teacher-student relationships and a learning environment.
"The University of Canberra is a welcoming place because UC celebrates different cultural activities throughout the year.For example, cultural festivals and performances on campus, as well as teachers and students from different backgrounds on campus." she said.

"Growing up in Canberra, I was full of anticipation for university life at UC. The environment here is relaxing and enjoyable, making it stress-free for a freshman to explore around. I still remember when I started university in 2021, I was more excited than ever!"
Although Selena was not born in Australia, she found a sense of home in Canberra and at the University of Canberra. "The best part is that every corner carries precious memories of my growth." she said.
"Canberra is a great place for studying, with its cultural diversity, rich history, art, and entertainment activities."Selena added.
Steps to Success
After three years of university study, Selena believes that choosing the University of Canberra was the right decision to help her succeed in her future career. "My university courses have fully prepared me, and after completing the final year of courses, I will enter the workforce to continue accumulating my professional knowledge."
"Every course I took at UC was diverse, training my critical thinking, creativity, and confidence in doing anything."she said.
Regarding her learning experience, Selena believes thatsetting clear goals and completing course assignments in advance has always been the focus of her studies.
"This mindset keeps me motivated every semester. UC's courses have enabled me to gain practical experience in my professional field, providing me with great help." she added.
Selena's Future Outlook
Now that Selena's studies are only one year away from completion, she looks forward to completing her studies and graduating at the end of 2024. "I hope to find an entry-level graduate position in a corporate setting, focusing on work in the fields of communication and marketing." she said.
