Charles Darwin University (CDU) and Western Sydney University have recently signed a new cooperation agreement, marking an important step in the establishment process of the Northern Territory Medical School.

CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman AO and Western Sydney University Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover AO signed the cooperation agreement this week in Sydney, with the Western Sydney University Medical School providingCDU Medical Schoolwith curriculum support and guidance for a period of three years.

Professor Scott Bowmanstated that this collaboration will provide CDU with a learning structure to address the health challenges in the Northern Territory.

"We are very grateful for the collaboration with Western Sydney University, to access their medical school curriculum, and to receive their support and expertise in developing and launching our own medical courses," said Professor Bowman.

He added, "The Western Sydney University Medical School has demonstrated the impact of medical programs in regional settings, and this collaboration will bring us closer to establishing a medical school in the Northern Territory, laying the foundation for training health professionals in the Northern Territory."




The CDU Medical School team has begun adapting the Western Sydney University curriculum to meet the specific needs of the Northern Territory population.

Professor Glover stated that Western Sydney University is proud to collaborate with CDU to establish a solid and robust curriculum for its medical school. This will enhance medical education, training, and research, benefiting regional and remote communities in the Northern Territory.

He said, "Providing high-quality training for medical students in regional settings is crucial for developing a skilled and engaged local health workforce, which is a shared commitment with CDU and the Menzies School of Health Research."

The CDU Medical School received a $2.8 million grant from the Australian government last December to support the development work of the medical school towards accreditation.
