Job Description


Position: Media and Communications

Location: Suzhou Industrial Park, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province


The University of Sydney Centre in China is recruiting a Media and Communications professional to be based in the Suzhou Industrial Park, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province.


This position has a broad scope and will be required to build strong relationships across the media environment in China to deliver high-level professional communication support. It requires a highly-motivated, enthusiastic person, with excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Chinese.


Key accountabilities 

1. Promotion of the Sydney Centre in China

· Develop and implement a strategic communication plan for the Centre in China with support from the Executive Director and University of Sydney Marketing and Communications team.

· Develop and create marketing communications materials that raise the profile of the Centre, in line with branding guidelines. This includes but is not limited to printed collateral, web content and videos.

· Monitor Chinese and Australian media, and advise on media opportunities.

· Support the China activities of individual faculties, schools, and centres within the University of Sydney with effective promotion and communication strategies.


2. Media coordination

· In collaboration with the University media team, draft media releases and liaise with local, national and international media agencies. 

· Coordinate interviews between the media and the Executive Director and facilitate media interviews for visiting academics.

· Establish key working relationships with journalists, writers and specialist reporters in TV, print, radio and online environments to ensure optimal coverage for the Centre.

· Develop a manual for visiting academics on how to present themselves in a Chinese media environment.

· Develop and maintain a database of media contacts, and produce quarterly reports on media coverage of the Centre in China.


3. Website and social media management

· Manage and coordinate the Centre in China’s website including maintenance and updates.

· Coordinate web-based promotions and updates including social media such as Weibo and WeChat, and ensure that the Centre’s social media channels complement the University of Sydney’s social media presence.

· Act as photo editor for the website and publications as required.


Selection Criteria


•       University degree, preferably postgraduate in media, communications, marketing or journalism.


•       Three to five years’ work experience, preferably in an international education, science or research environment. Applicants with less than three years’ experience may be considered if they demonstrate solid academic records andrelevant skills.


•       Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement.


•       Problem solving skills and the ability to prioritise workload during busy periods.


•       Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Modern Standard (Mandarin) Chinese and English.


•       Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite and ability to use publishing and video editing software.


•       Experience in developing and maintaining productive relationships with industry, business and government, and demonstrated ability to coordinate meetings with senior officials and business leaders.


•       Experience and knowledge of the media and communications environment in China, and experience in writing for media and communications outlets.


•       Experience in preparing high-quality promotional material, including e-marketing and social media, such as WeChat and Weibo.
