TAFE SA CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE

TAFE SA has been approved for two Centres of Excellence: The Centre of Excellence in Early Childhood Education and Care and The National Security Centre of Excellence. These centres, a joint initiative of the Australian and South Australian governments, will focus on delivering innovative training for high-priority industries and contribute to national security and the development of a skilled workforce, according to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR).
Every Child Deserves the Best Start in Life. The TAFE SA Centre of Excellence in Early Childhood Education and Care is a national leader in vocational education and training (VET), dedicated to building a skilled, inclusive, and culturally responsive workforce that supports children, families, and communities across Australia.
Guided by the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care and established through a joint initiative between the Australian and South Australian governments, the Centre collaborates with educators, universities, industry stakeholders, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations to co-design training that reflects real-world needs and supports inclusive practice. Our Early Childhood Education Centre of Excellence is based at TAFESA’s Adelaide Campus and serves as a hub for research, innovation, and workforce development in the early childhood sector.
In addition, TAFE SA has been approved nationally for a new $28M National Security TAFE Centre of Excellence regarding national security. The National Security TAFE Centre of Excellence aims to strengthen Australia’s sovereign capability, protect supply chains, and counter foreign interference and cyber-attacks particularly in the engineering, electrotechnology and manufacturing industries, which are most at risk of physical and digital threats. This new National Security Centre of Excellencewill be located at TAFE SA’s Regency Park Campus and will advance Australia’s sovereign capability as well as deliver world-class advanced training in electrotechnology, electronics and engineering alongside upskilling workers for AUKUS.
Preparing SA's workforce for AUKUS projects will be a key priority, including partnerships with UK and US education institutes to transfer advanced technology training, and developing new qualifications with industry for Australia’s defence sector.

UPDATE TO ENGLISH TEST INFORMATION
As of the 1st of October 2025, the TAFE SA website has been updated to include our current rules regarding English Tests for International Applicants. This information not only includes IELTS scores and alternate tests but what courses are eligible for English waivers, ELICOS course information, IELTS equivalents in relation to completion of Australian Year 10 / 11 in highschool and more. English test information is important for a variety of reasons including:
- Providing accurate information for applicants with completed alternate English tests
- Improving your ability to gauge applicant’s English knowledge outside of an IELTS score
- Accurately recommending alternate study options or packages that include ELICOS courses or correspond to an applicant’s English proficiency.
- Assistance in identifying suitable applicants based off of their English score.

TAFE SA AI SHORT COURSE INITIATIVE
TAFE SA launches free short course on AI to prepare workforce for the future
The South Australian Government is launching a free short course offered by TAFE SA to help build the essential knowledge and skills for people to understand and use artificial intelligence (AI).
It's among the first of its kind in Australia.
The micro-credential, AI Essentials: Getting Started with Artificial Intelligence, includes an introduction to how the technology works, and raises awareness of privacy, safety and ethical considerations.
Developed by TAFE SA, the course is free and available online, offering flexibility and accessibility for people wherever they live across South Australia to learn about the new technology.
The course is designed to support South Australian workers to upskill – ensuring they have access to the skills development and training they deserve.
It follows the recent announcement that an AI tool developed by the Department for Education and Microsoft is set to be rolled out to all public secondary students from next term. South Australia was the only jurisdiction in Australia not to ban AI in schools, instead taking the opportunity to prepare students for the world in which they live.
EdChat, which is similar to the AI tool ChatGPT, was specifically designed for educational use in South Australia and has additional security protections in place to safeguard students.
The AI TAFE course requires between five and 10 hours of self-paced study and participants will receive a certificate of completion once they have finished.
The fully online course provides engaging and easy-to-follow content exploring what AI is, how it works and how it is being applied at work and home.
The course will be available from Monday, September 29 and people can register their interest via the TAFE SA website from today.

STUDENT NEWS
SOCIAL WEDNESDAYS INITIATIVE
Over the past 6 weeks, TAFE SA’s international team has held the Regency Park Social Wednesday event to create a safe space for both international and domestic students. During this period of time, roughly 30 students regularly attended these events to play boardgames such as Yahtzee and Uno, challenge other students at Jenga or Ping Pong and have relaxed conversations with staff and fellow academics in a casual and easy-going environment. Additionally, from this event we were able to gain insights into the cohort’s opinion regarding international mental health via the completion of a survey.
This event would not have been possible without the assistance of TAFE SA staff members: Julie Ladic (International Student Support Consultant - International), Asyraf Azhar (International Support Coordinator - International), Chloe Nguyen (International Recruitment Consultant - International), Michelle Brown (Manager, Operations - International), Annalee Inovero (International Recruitment Consultant - International), Matthew Kaczmarek (International Enquiry Officer – International), Mark Huxtable (Automotive Lecturer - Automotive) and Vince Salzone (Automotive Lecturer - Automotive) as well as our 2025 International Ambassadors Gia Khuong Tran, Jennifer Cure Perez and Jayanitha Suthagaran.
To celebrate the final Social Wednesday Event, TAFE SA staff and the International Ambassadors all worked together to make a sausage sizzle for the attendees as a show of gratitude and respect for the diligent students who have travelled across the world to pursue their dream career, something that is evident from the attached pictures. While the event may conclude for this semester, the international team and automotive faculty have noticed the positive impact it has on the Regency Park cohort and we hope that in the future, more events like Social Wednesdays can brighten the day of students from all around Adelaide.
