Application fee increase in 2024

The University of Melbourne has increased the application fee for international applicants from  AUD$120 to AUD$130. This fee amendment commenced from 1 January 2024.

English language tests

Please note the University of Melbourne will no longer accept any online English tests to meet the University’s English language requirements.

Applicants who have already submitted their application and completed either the TOEFL iBT at Home or PTE Academic Online English tests up to Friday 14 July 2023 11:55 PM AUS Eastern Standard Time (AEST) will still have their results considered. Please visit our website for more information.

Conditional or packaged CoEs

Students eligible for conditional or packaged CoEs can now submit their acceptance documents via the same acceptance portal as unconditional acceptances.

While acceptance documents are no longer required to be uploaded into the application, they will still need to be provided within the acceptance portal. This applies to students who have been offered a conditional CoE based on academic results (usually India, China or Vietnam for mid-year) or a packaged CoE based on enrolment at Hawthorn-Melbourne.

Note: Students accepting UMELBP offers must also upload all CoEs (UMELP and UMELBP Prep if applicable) from Hawthorn-Melbourne in their acceptance agreement.

Information related to undergraduate applications

Direct applications for the mid-year intake

Commencing with the 2024 mid-year intake, the University of Melbourne will accept direct mid-year applications from the following international applicant cohorts, rather than requiring them to apply via VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre), for mid-year commencement:

  • International applicants studying an interstate Australian Year 12 qualification in the northern hemisphere (for example, the WACE or the SACE), and
  • International applicants studying the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in New Zealand, or in the northern hemisphere.

Student educational background details

As we increasingly utilise automation in parts of our assessment process, please ensure that your applicants' secondary and/or tertiary educational background is completed accurately -and that the relevant qualification is selected correctly - when assisting undergraduate applicants to submit their online application.

Educational background and qualification details are crucial in improving our application turnaround times – particularly for current Year 12 (secondary school) applicants. If the correct secondary school qualification is not selected in the application, and/or the Student Educational Background details are not populated correctly, this will cause delays in the assessment of undergraduate applications.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) applicants from private schools

The University will only consider Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) applicants from private schools if:

  • The private OSSD school that the applicant has studied at is not wholly online; and
  • The applicant has completed all 30 credits in the OSSD program at the school, or – where equivalent credits have been granted – prior study was from an approved pathway; and
  • The private school is inspected by the Ontario Ministry of Education and has the authority to grant credits in courses leading to the OSSD.
  • Please see our website for more information.

Information related to graduate applications

Student educational background and education agent details

Please continue to ensure that your agency details and appropriate service level, the applicant’s secondary and/or tertiary educational background is completed accurately, and the relevant qualification is selected correctly as these are instrumental in improving our turnaround times.

It is also important that – prior to submitting applications – you double-check that you have completed all relevant requirements and entered your agency details. If you do not complete all relevant requirements or attach all relevant documents this will delay the assessment of the application(s).

Indicating 'application preferences'

When applying for graduate coursework programs, please note that a maximum of three graduate-entry course preferences can be selected.

Therefore, please add the most preferred course as your number one preference, followed by your second and then third most preferred courses.

The University of Melbourne Admissions team will assess your preferences in descending order starting with your first preference.  If you receive an offer for your first course preference, then any subsequent preferences (second or third) will not be assessed. If you're not made an offer to your first preference but are eligible and competitive enough for your second preference, you'll be made an offer to your second preference and so on.

Faculty of Arts

Mid-year update and start-year guidance

The Faculty of Arts has seen unprecedented demand for our graduate programs for the 2024 intakes. As a result, we had to move forward the application closing date and had to select applicants for many programs at WAM scores higher than the minimum requirements.

We have produced a reference guide which includes the following in detail:

  • The indicative WAMs for any outstanding mid-year offers and for students considering start-year 2025 entry.
  • A list of courses with mid-year application closing date extensions; and
  • The application closing dates for the start-year 2025 intake.

Offer lapse date: mid-year returning deferrals

Some students currently deferred into mid-year 2024 have received an email update noting that the offer lapse date has moved to 31st March. These students must accept and meet offer conditions by this date.

Please note: No further deferrals will be granted.
