(Graduate English language requirements )
We have recently updated our English language requirements (ELR).
On 17 November, the University published updates to our ELR website to improve clarity and navigation, and to communicate important changes to our requirements.
Following new guidance from the Department of Home Affairs, the University of Melbourne has made the following updates:
- Revised English language test scores for existing tests: we have updated equivalent scores for our accepted tests, including TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, and Cambridge.
- Acceptance of additional tests: we now accept LanguageCert Academic and the Michigan English Test (MET) to meet our ELR. We also now accept IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR).
- Removal of Cambridge C2 proficiency (CPE): This test has been removed from our list of accepted tests.
Updates to English language requirements webpages:
- English language requirements: we have redeveloped this page, including adding more information about our accepted tests and how to submit results. You can continue to view the specific study level requirements as follows:
o Undergraduate English language requirements
o Graduate English language requirements
For current offer holders and applicants awaiting outcomes:
- 2025 English language requirements: this website aims to support current offer holders and applicants to understand which ELR scores relate to them.
What does this mean for applicants?
As we transition between the previous and updated scores, there will be a period where both scores are used for assessment. This approach ensures that applicants are not disadvantaged during the changeover. The assessment rules are as follows:
- Students that applied or received an offer for all future intakes before 17 November 2025 will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, and ELR can be met using either the 2025 English language requirements or the updated graduate or undergraduate English language scores.
- Applications received on or after 17 November for Start year 2026 will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, and ELR can be met using either the 2025 English language requirements or the updated graduate or undergraduate English language scores.
- Applications received on or after 17 November, for Mid-year 2026 intake or beyond will need to meet the updated graduate or undergraduate ELR.
Thank you for your ongoing support and for helping our applicants and offer holders to understand our English requirements. If you have general questions about these changes, please feel free to reach out to me directly.
