In this course you will explore the importance of communication as a foundation to practice as a health professional. You will gain an understanding of the factors which impact on professional communication including personal values and cultural factors, and be introduced to the concepts of professionalism, ethical practice, inter-professional collaborative practice, and digital literacy. The course will give you an understanding of the communication skills required for culturally-safe and reflective practice as a future health professional and insight into how communication can be used to build more inclusive communities. You will explore the status of the Australian Healthcare system and your role as an emerging professional that will support patient care, clinical and laboratory practice or supporting research. You will learn by engaging with interprofessional and discipline specific case studies that will be unpacked during lectorial and/or tutorial sessions. The theoretical concepts that underpin communication and professional practice will be provided by recorded lectures involving all the disciplines in the School of Health and Biomedical sciences with insights from our industry partners.
