Group A|BLCU Opening ceremony (北京语言大学的开营典礼)

This week the VYLC Group A attended the Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) Opening Ceremony.

Krystal Siow, East Doncaster Secondary College and Lorenzo Celestino, Suzanne Cory High School, delivered the welcome speeches outlining their reasons for learning the Chinese language. Below are their speeches.

大家下午好! Good afternoon teachers, staff, and fellow VYLC students.

我的名字叫Krystal.我在东登卡斯特中学上学。My name is Krystal and I'm from East Doncaster Secondary College in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

“Firstly, as the representative of the Victorian young leaders , I would like to thank Beijing Language and Culture University for hosting our program and having 90 kids  running around this huge and prestigious campus for 2 weeks. I would also like to give a special thanks to Hanban for scheduling this two weeks in Beijing for us and organising all the events and day trips.

Chinese is becoming one of the most spoken languages in the world and I believe that learning Chinese can help us consolidate our skills in communicating with people from China, the most populated country and all the Chinese communities around the world. Mastering Chinese is very helpful no matter if it's for when you travel, when someone needs help to translate and communicate in a foreign country or even setting up a business in the future with Chinese businessmen. That is why I'm studying Chinese right now, as it provides multiple future pathways and it can simply connect people together.

However, just studying Chinese using a textbook with a teacher talking in front of the whiteboard is not enough, and coming to the VYLC program provides plenty of opportunities for us to really apply what we've learned in school and speak in Chinese with local people. Through this program, we can also broaden our horizons by experiencing the Chinese culture and learning more about the language itself.

在北京语言大学学习期间,我们期盼能学到一些我们在澳大利亚很少有机会接触到的知识,也希望能留下一些美好的回忆。

接下来,我请Lorenzo同学为大家分享他为什么参加维州青年领导者项目。

Now I invite Lorenzo from Suzanne Cory high school to share his thoughts and aspirations for the VYLC program.”

“Da jia hao (大家好), wo jiao Luorenzuo from Suzanne Cory High School, Melbourne.

First of all, I would like to thank Beijing Yuyan Daxue(北京语言大学) for this lovely campus.

Following up on Krystal’s speech, I will be talking to you about why I chose to study Chinese and why I applied for this program. Personally, I believe that learning Chinese, as Krystal has said, is very beneficial for the future. However, l also believe that learning a foreign language can be very tedious if you do not enjoy it, especially when there is such a large difference between the English and the Chinese language. In saying this I chose Chinese because I enjoy many different aspects, such as the language itself, the Chinese culture and history.

Thus, my interest in the Chinese culture motivated me to attend and become a participant of the VYLC Program.

As this is my first time in China, leading up to this trip I was very nervous while also excited. As it is a once in a lifetime opportunity and a privilege to be provided with such a great program, by traveling overseas to further expand our knowledge and opportunities at such an early part of our lives.

Xie Xie da jia (谢谢大家).”
