This year, La Trobe University celebrates a significant historical moment - the 50th anniversary of nursing education at the Melbourne (Bundoora) and Bendigo campuses.50th anniversary.


Asone of Australia's oldest nursing institutions, La Trobe University is renowned not only for its innovative teaching but also for its outstanding research achievements and continuous investment in advanced infrastructure.

Professor Theo Farrell, Vice-Chancellor of La Trobe University, reflected on the university's glorious history in cultivating passionate and responsible nursing talents.

He said, "Since La Trobe took overAustralia's first pre-registration nursing diploma programin 1974, over the past fifty years, we have been committed to nurturing a new generation of nursing professionals in both urban and remote areas. Today, whether they are young nurses just starting their careers or experienced practitioners, our alumni demonstrate extraordinary professionalism and leadership in the nursing field."

Professor Lisa McKenna, Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, pointed out that nursing education has undergone tremendous transformation over the past fifty years. "From the early hospital internship training model to today's higher education system, the face of nursing education has changed dramatically."

Professor McKenna shared, "In 1990, we launched the first nursing honors degreeprogram and began enrollingPhD students, marking a new phase in La Trobe's nursing research. In 2001, the introduction of thedual degree program in nursing and midwiferyfurther broadened students' choices, and the launch of thedual degree in nursing and psychological sciencein 2019 opened up new possibilities for interdisciplinary nursing talent development."

To address the national shortage of nursing staff, La Trobe's Rural Health School welcomedits first cohort of undergraduate nursing studentsthis year, further expanding the reach of nursing education. Professor Jane Mills, Dean of the Rural Health School, emphasized that the university's investment in nursing education is not only reflected in teaching. Currently, the university is investing 86 million Australian dollars to buildnew clinical nursing and midwifery laboratories, providing nursing students with the best learning experience.

Professor Mills stated, "The new nursing and midwifery laboratories at various campuses in Victoria provide students with a high-quality learning environment, helping them succeed in their careers. Whether you are just entering the nursing profession or looking to make a breakthrough in your current career, La Trobe offers a wide range of course options to help you enhance your skills or re-enter the nursing profession."

La Trobe University's nursing discipline is ranked44th globallyin the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject, showcasing its strong strength in the international nursing education field.
