Mid-Autumn

Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival is an important traditional festival in the Chinese character cultural circle, originating in China, celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, usually falling between early September and early October in the Gregorian calendar.

1

The Mid-Autumn Festival is not only popular in China but also celebrated in many countries in East and Southeast Asia, especially in Chinese communities.

2

Moon viewing is an important activity of the Mid-Autumn Festival, recorded as early as the Liu Song period, especially popular during the Tang and Song dynasties. Today, moon viewing has become a common way of celebration in many regions.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is also a time for family reunion. People try to return home to eat, chat, and gather with their loved ones. Of course, ancestor worship is also an important part of this festival.

The Mid-Autumn Festival's cuisine is rich and particular, with mooncakes being indispensable, symbolizing reunion. Seasonal fruits like pomelo, chestnuts, and persimmons are also common festival foods, symbolizing a bountiful harvest.

Carrying lanterns is also a highlight of the Mid-Autumn Festival, especially in southern China and Vietnam. Many places hold large lantern parades, with colorful lights illuminating the night sky.

The Mid-Autumn Festival continues to be celebrated in modern times and has become a statutory holiday in China, with people celebrating through family reunions, moon viewing, and eating mooncakes.
